The manner in which plants or animals are produced leads to an environmental fingerprint. In animals, this is linked to the feed and water they consume. Free-range, corn-fed and organic production systems deliver subtle difference in the profiles. These can be used, through expert interpretation, to check for consistency with the claims made.
In produce, the environmental fingerprint is affected by fertilizer used, source of carbon dioxide for respiration and growing conditions. The differences between conventional production and organic farming methods allow us to distinguish between the two production systems (in most produce) and check for consistency with organic production claims. This can be used in tandem with pesticide residue analysis.
